Rise Up & Walk

Text: John 5:1–10

Theme: God calls every believer to rise from comfort and complacency into a life of purpose, obedience, and revelation. We are not made to remain where we are—we are made for more.

1. The Importance of Gathering

  • When Jesus went to Jerusalem, the people gathered for a feast. In the same way, gathering as a church is not a ritual but a celebration of God’s presence.
  • While God can meet us anywhere, something powerful happens when His people come together—there’s joy, impartation, and divine encounters.
  • Coming to church isn’t a Sunday routine; it’s an opportunity to experience the goodness of God and to encourage one another.

Application: Come with expectation each week—not out of habit, but out of hunger for His presence. Bring others along to experience the same joy.

2. Living from the House of Loving Kindness

  • The miracle at the pool of Bethesda happened near the Sheep Gate, representing God’s people—the flock under His care.
  • “Bethesda” means “house of loving kindness,” reminding us that we are called to reveal God’s compassion wherever we go.
  • Salvation is not a ticket to heaven—it’s the start of a life that reveals heaven on earth.
  • We are saved to bring hope, healing, and deliverance to others.

Application: Don’t just stay in the house of loving kindness—take it with you into your workplace, classroom, and community.

3. Called to Reach the Lost

  • God’s heart is for the lost, the broken, and the forgotten.
  • Many believers focus only on receiving blessings, but true Christianity is about reflecting the Father’s heart—to love, reach, and restore.
  • Revival doesn’t begin in stadiums; it starts when believers carry Jesus into everyday places.

Application: Share God’s love intentionally this week—with colleagues, classmates, or neighbors. Revival begins with one obedient act of love.

4. The Power of Personal Encounter

  • The man at the pool was sick for 38 years—symbolic of a generation that wandered in the wilderness without entering the Promised Land.
  • Though he was in the right place, he remained unchanged until he personally encountered Jesus.
  • Religion can keep us near the pool; only relationship can make us walk again.

Application: Don’t live on secondhand faith. Seek fresh, personal encounters with Jesus daily.

5. What Must You Do?

When Jesus asked the man, “Do you want to be made well?”, his response revealed misplaced dependence on man instead of faith in God.

When life feels stagnant or delayed:

  • Don’t blame God – His timing is perfect.
  • Don’t blame others – Bitterness keeps you bound.
  • Don’t blame yourself – God’s grace restores and redeems.

Instead, strengthen yourself in the Lord, and respond in obedience to His Word—“Pick up your bed and walk.”

6. Hearing and Speaking God’s Word

  • Jesus didn’t touch the man; He spoke a word. The miracle came through obedience to that word.
  • We must not only know the written Word but also listen to the proceeding Word—what the Spirit is speaking now.
  • The Word is alive and operative. When you hear and act upon it, transformation follows.

Application: Before reading Scripture, pray, “Holy Spirit, what are You saying to me through this?” Then walk it out in obedience.

7. Made for More

  • We are no longer to make our bed in places of shame, fear, or spiritual stagnation.
  • Just as Lazarus was called out of the grave, Jesus calls us by name to rise and walk in newness of life.
  • You were created for purpose, equipped by the Spirit, and empowered by His Word.

Application: Leave the old behind. Step into your calling and let God’s power work through you daily.

Practical Applications

  1. Spend time with God personally each day.
  2. Share the gospel in small, practical ways.
  3. Obey quickly when God speaks.
  4. Believe that you are made for more than comfort.
  5. Let your encounters with Jesus produce testimony and transformation.

Reflection Questions for Life Group

  1. What holds you back from “picking up your bed and walking”?
  2. How can you live out the “house of loving kindness” in your daily life?
  3. What personal encounter with Jesus has changed you recently?
  4. How can you better hear and obey God’s voice in this season?

Closing Call

“You are not called to sit at the pool—you are called to rise and walk. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in you. Step out, speak His Word, and walk in your calling. You were made for more.”
