Key Texts: 1 Thessalonians 5:23–24; Ephesians 5:18; Isaiah 11; James 4:7–8; Galatians 5:22–23; Luke 2:52; 3 John 2; Hebrews 11; Jeremiah 33:6; Colossians 2:10

Theme: The God of peace desires to sanctify the believer completely, spirit, soul, and body, and to preserve each one blameless at the coming of the Lord Jesus, because He who calls is faithful and will do it.

Blaming No One: The Meaning of Blameless

Two words from 1 Thessalonians 5:23, preserved blameless, form the apostle's blessing and prayer for the Thessalonian church after many instructions. The simplest way to be blameless is to blame no one: not God, not the government, not a brother, sister, parent, son, or daughter, and not the devil with the excuse that he made a person do it. Taking responsibility rather than assigning blame is therefore the first step toward the life that Paul prays for.

The verse opens with the words "May the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely." God has shown Himself as Provider, Protector, and ever-present Helper, and also as Jehovah Shalom, the God of peace. Sanctification is therefore connected with peace, because a person who is not at peace and not guarded allows many things to trouble the heart. Every person is precious, with value and dignity, formed in the womb as a gift to parents and meant to be preserved in the identity of a son or daughter of God. Those who lose that identity and do not know who they are can be claimed by the enemy for the kingdom of darkness, but believers are children of light.

Application:
Name one person or circumstance you have been blaming, and bring that blame to the God of peace today, asking Him to guard your heart.

Looking Toward the Coming of Christ

1 Thessalonians mentions the coming of Christ four times, in chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5, so the whole book looks toward His return. He came as the Lamb of God and will come as King of kings and Lord of lords. Wars and rumours of wars, as the Lord foretold, trouble the world, but believers belong to heaven and are temporary travellers on earth. If the Lord has not yet returned, the body of dust returns to dust and the believer goes on to the other side with a heavenly calling. In the meantime an earthly calling remains, to fulfil roles and responsibilities as the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

To preserve means to safeguard from loss or injury, and many carry injuries of the heart, such as a broken heart, a jilted heart, rejection, and wounds in the spirit, as well as physical injuries from accidents and falls. Verse 24 gives the assurance: He who calls you is faithful, and He will do it. What the Lord especially seeks to preserve is faith, for He asks whether He will find faith on earth when He returns. Whatever can be shaken in heaven and on earth will be shaken, and the believer is to remain steadfast in Christ.

Application:
Keep your earthly responsibilities as salt and light faithfully this week while fixing your eyes on the Lord's return, and entrust your wounded places to the One who is faithful to do it.

The Spirit: Filled, Not Footholds of Darkness

The first of the three parts to be preserved is the spirit. Ephesians 5:18 contrasts being drunk with wine, which leads to excess and to reckless, uncontrolled behaviour that can crash a life in a single moment, with being filled with the Spirit. The question is what kind of spirit fills the believer. Jesus cast an unclean spirit out of the temple, which shows that unclean spirits, including lustful spirits and spirits of darkness, can linger in the church and work in minds and hearts. A person who has given a foothold to such a spirit lives with bondages, struggles, guilt, and difficulty in growing in the things of God. One may speak in tongues and still have an area of weakness in which the enemy can make the person a slave to a habit whenever he comes.

Isaiah 11 describes the Spirit of the Lord in seven aspects: wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. These give wisdom that does not rest on human knowledge or past experience and discernment that looks deeper. Holy Spirit means Spirit of holiness, and a spirit of unholiness carried from past failures, immorality, or ungodly relationships can keep working in a marriage unless those ties have been cut and dealt with. This explains why some are drawn back to a first love after decades, a connection that is emotional and sentimental and not the love of God. Being sanctified completely means being willing to be cleansed in spirit, soul, and body.

Discouragement likewise shows that a spirit of discouragement has gained a foothold, whereas the Spirit of encouragement enables a person to rise above distractions. Believers who have been in the church for many years can still be hurt by a small word or look, like uncovered wires that are not insulated, because the past comes into the present and continues to affect the future unless the Spirit of God fills them.

Application:
Ask the Holy Spirit to show you any habit, hurt, or old attachment where darkness has a foothold, and bring it to Him for cleansing today.

Submission and Freedom

Not every sickness is caused by an unclean spirit, but when Jesus delivered people from illness, it was often spirits working in their hearts that were driven out, after which restoration and healing followed. Freedom begins with James 4:7–8: submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee, draw near to God and He will draw near, cleanse the hands and purify the heart. Submission is an essential commodity, and it is tested in daily life, for a person who has not learned to submit to parents and to authorities, and who carries a fighting spirit against those above him, deceives himself in claiming to submit to God. Being double-minded, with part of life given to God and part open to the devil, produces confusion, conflict, and struggle. The remedy is to be filled afresh with the Holy Spirit, rejecting the powers of darkness over self, home, and generations, and receiving grace upon grace and favour upon favour. Believers stand marked as those redeemed by the blood of Jesus and cleansed by the Word of God.

Application:
Examine where you resist authority at home, church, or work, and choose this week to submit in that one place as an act of submitting to God.

The Soul and the Fruit of the Spirit

The second part is the soul, made up of the mind, will, and emotions, and the fruit of the Spirit is deeply related to it, transforming the inner life, the character, and the emotional landscape. The fruit originates from the Holy Spirit and not from human will or emotional effort, and it is expressed through the soul, healing and reshaping the inner self by replacing the destructive patterns of the sinful nature. It grows as the believer yields, submits, and abides in Christ, allows the Word of God to renew the mind, experiences healing and healthier relationships, and speaks positively, since the tongue brings life or death. The fruit includes love, joy, the peace of Christ that surpasses understanding, patience, and goodness. Patience, rendered long-suffering in another version, means not being free from suffering but suffering long, so that a person who is given a hard time can respond with thanks and a blessing, trusting that God is working in him through the other. Spiritual formation does not end with a class or with the end of a year, because God continues to work until Christ is formed in the believer.

Faithfulness is to be manifested toward spouse, children, partners in the church, and God, so that God manifests Himself in the believer. Meekness is seen in Moses, who had an anger problem yet was called very meek by God, and as a boy Jesus continued to grow in wisdom, stature, and favour (Luke 2:52). It is others, and not the person himself, who should say that he has changed, in the way he speaks, shows attitude, and comes alongside, because the result is Christ-like, edifying, helpful, and supportive. The fruit is one fruit and is not to be divided into favourite parts, and love and self-control, the first and the last, belong together: love without self-control goes off track, whereas the love of God with self-control establishes healthy boundaries. Young people in particular are to establish such boundaries in heart and mind, saying no thank you to friends and to the pull of phones and media, with self-control over mind, eyes, ears, hands, and feet, since the lack of it opens the door to unclean spirits.

Application:
Ask a trusted friend where they have seen the fruit of the Spirit grow in you and where it has not, and set one healthy boundary through self-control this week.

A Sweet Fragrance and a Prospering Soul

3 John 2 expresses the wish that the believer prosper in all things and be in health, even as the soul prospers, and this is the true prosperity gospel: prospering in the things of God, in relationships with people, in health, and in finances. As the fruit of the Spirit grows bigger and bigger, it gives off a sweet fragrance that is healing to the soul. That fragrance comes through the life, the presence, the body language, the facial expression, and the words. When the name of such a person is mentioned, it strikes a good chord, whereas some names prompt others to be careful. The fruit simply flows from one in whom the Spirit of God is working.

Application:
Ask yourself what is stirred in others when your name is mentioned, and let the Spirit make your words and presence a sweet and healing fragrance this week.

The Body: Peace and a Healthy System

The third part is the body, a system of seventy-eight organs created by God to reflect His image, creativity, power, and wisdom from infancy through youth, as with Daniel and his three friends in a foreign land, whose features showed that God was in their lives. When the system fails, the results can include paralysis, pain, failure of the heart, lungs, or kidneys, mental and emotional breakdown, allergies, imbalance, weakness, inappropriate responses in relationships, barrenness, and loss of appetite. Symptoms can include severe fatigue, confusion, shallow breathing, an irregular heartbeat, restlessness, sleeplessness, fears, and phobias, and the failure affects not only the person but those around him. Because the immune, lymphatic, and endocrine systems work together, one area that fails can trigger many others, which is why believers are called to maintain the unity of the Spirit.

Peace is the key to a healthy system: peace with God, peace with one another, and peace within oneself. Troubled relationships, unhealthy eating habits such as swallowing food rather than chewing it slowly and finishing a meal in ten minutes, and the enemy's waves of attack can upset the body, so the believer prays, "God, You are the God of peace, restore the peace in my system." The aim is that every part works in one accord so that the body may be preserved healthy. Even when it is not, the peace of God can remain, allowing the believer to say that all is well, to bless the Lord with all that is within him, and to ride out storms without letting the enemy take that peace.

Application:
Ask the God of peace to restore peace in your body and relationships, and practise eating slowly and chewing your food as one small step of caring for the body He gave you.

Enduring Faith and Completeness in Christ

Hebrews 11 describes men and women who endured torture, mockings, scourgings, imprisonment, stoning, and wandering in deserts, mountains, and caves. They obtained a good report through faith, remained steadfast through adversity, and did not receive the promise in their lifetime, because God provided something better that is made perfect together with believers. Jeremiah 33:6 promises health and healing and the revealing of the abundance of peace and truth, so that knowing the truth sets a person free and the shalom peace of Christ keeps the heart from being easily disturbed by what is heard, seen, or experienced.

Colossians 2:10 declares that believers are complete in Him, in whom the fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily. In themselves and as a church people remain incomplete, with much that still needs attention, yet faith, hope, and the peace of God continue. The believer is to be filled with the Spirit, speaking in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs and making melody to the Lord with thanksgiving. The peace of God is not to be kept inside but allowed to flow out, so that those around the believer may be at peace as well and not fall into rage or into situations that damage relationships.

Application:
Rest today in being complete in Christ, and let His peace flow out in one conversation where you would normally react in anger.

Life Group Reflection Questions

1. The simplest way to be blameless is to blame no one: not God, the government, family, or the devil. Whom or what do you tend to blame when things go wrong, and what would it look like to bring that to the God of peace instead?

2. The message warns that a person can speak in tongues and still have an area of weakness where the enemy holds a foothold. Where might a habit, hurt, or old attachment be giving ground, and what step of submission from James 4:7–8 could you take this week?

3. Some believers are like uncovered wires, easily hurt by a small word or look because the past comes into the present. What past hurt tends to surface in your reactions today, and how might the Spirit of encouragement help you rise above it?

4. It is others, not ourselves, who should say that we have changed. Which part of the one fruit of the Spirit would those closest to you say they see growing, and where do you need healthy boundaries through self-control?

5. Peace with God, with one another, and within oneself was linked to a healthy body, and Hebrews 11 shows faith enduring even when promises are not yet received. Which of these three kinds of peace needs the most attention right now, and how can you hold on to the peace of God when circumstances are not well?

Closing Summary

This message traces a single, consistent thread: the God of peace desires to sanctify the whole person, spirit, soul, and body, and to preserve each one blameless until the coming of the Lord Jesus. From the call to stop blaming others, to being filled with the Holy Spirit and freed from every foothold of darkness, to the fruit of the Spirit in the soul and peace within the body, the pattern is the same. He who calls is faithful and will do it. The call of this message is to submit fully to Him, let His fruit grow and flow out to others, and rest as one who is complete in Christ.
