Living with a Purpose

Texts: Ephesians 2:10; Jeremiah 29:11; Romans 8:28
Theme: Every person is created by God for a specific purpose. Life without purpose is existence without meaning—but life aligned with God’s plan brings fulfillment, hope, and joy.
1. Created for Purpose
“The greatest tragedy is not death, but life without purpose.”
- Many people live as “trench diggers”—working, earning, and repeating cycles without knowing why they exist.
- Without belief in a Creator, life feels meaningless and repetitive. Arthur Schopenhauer called human life “a mistake.”
- C.S. Lewis wrote, “Our desires are not too strong, but too weak… we are far too easily pleased.”
- God offers infinite joy and purpose, but we often settle for lesser things—comfort, success, or routine.
Application: You were not created to merely survive, but to know God and fulfill His divine purpose in your generation.
2. A Picture of Purpose – The Happy Prince
- Oscar Wilde’s story “The Happy Prince” depicts a once-selfish prince who, after death, sees the suffering of his people.
- Through a little swallow, he gives away his treasures to help others, even until both are discarded by men but honored in heaven.
Application: Purpose is not found in pleasure, but in compassion and service. A life of purpose always blesses others.
3. God’s Design – Plan, Purpose, and Calling
- Ephesians 2:10: We are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus for good works prepared in advance.
- Jeremiah 29:11: His plans are for good—to give us a future and hope.
- Romans 8:28: All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose.
These verses reveal three truths:
- There is a Plan: God’s design for your life is intentional and specific.
- There is a Purpose: You are called to do the good things He prepared long ago.
- There is a Calling: Your unique journey fits into God’s grand story of redemption.
Application: You are a masterpiece in the making. Let God complete what He started in you.
4. Three Keys to Living with Purpose
a. Acknowledge and Align with the Sovereign Will of God
- Jonah ran from God’s will and faced storms until he repented.
- Running from God always leads downhill—alignment brings peace and fulfillment.
- When Jonah surrendered, God restored him to his mission in Nineveh.
Application: The safest, most joyful place to be is in the center of God’s will. Stop running and surrender to His direction.
b. Serve Others with Your Gifts
- Each believer has been given gifts to serve others (1 Peter 4:10).
- Serving reveals your purpose and builds Christlike character.
- Joseph’s rise to power began with servanthood. Elisha’s double portion came after years of faithful service to Elijah.
Application: Serve faithfully where you are. Small acts of obedience open doors to greater purpose.
c. Wait for the Perfect Timing of God – Then Go All In
- Moses acted too early and spent 40 years in the wilderness before God’s appointed time.
- Nehemiah waited four months in prayer before rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls.
- Patience and prayer position us for divine timing.
Application: Purpose unfolds through patience. When God says “Go,” move boldly and commit fully.
5. Testimony of Obedience
The preacher shared how God’s leading transformed his career path. Trained as an engineer, he felt prompted to study finance and marketing—disciplines that later equipped him to serve as CEO of an international venture. What once seemed illogical became part of God’s perfect preparation.
Application: God’s instructions may not always make sense, but they always make purpose. Obedience today prepares you for what God has planned tomorrow.
Reflection Questions for Life Group
- What does living with purpose mean to you personally?
- Which of the three keys—alignment, service, or timing—do you need to grow in most?
- Have you ever experienced a moment when obedience revealed God’s bigger plan?
- How can you use your gifts to serve others more intentionally this week?
Closing Call
“You are God’s masterpiece, created with purpose and placed in this time for a reason. Don’t settle for mud pies when God has prepared a sea of joy. Align with His will, serve with your gifts, wait for His timing—and live the life you were created for.”
