Don’t Look Back

Texts: Luke 9:57–62; Luke 17:28–32; Genesis 19:15–26

Theme: Once we have chosen to follow Jesus, there is no turning back. God calls us to move forward in faith, leaving behind what hinders us, and to live as pilgrims who fix their eyes on the eternal Kingdom.

1. The Call to Follow Without Turning Back

In Luke 9, Jesus calls a man to follow Him. The man agrees—but with conditions: “Let me first bury my father.” Another says, “Let me first say goodbye to my family.” Jesus replies, “Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.”

These are hard words, but they remind us that following Jesus requires undivided focus. Just as a farmer cannot plow straight while looking behind, a believer cannot advance spiritually while longing for the past.

Application: When we say “yes” to God, we must not look back to comfort, convenience, or old ways. Forward faith is faithful faith.

2. Remember Lot’s Wife

Jesus gave one of the shortest and most sobering commands in Scripture: “Remember Lot’s wife” (Luke 17:32).

Lot’s wife lived in a city of abundance, surrounded by luxury and comfort. But her heart was tied to Sodom. When she looked back, she was turned into a pillar of salt—a symbol of spiritual paralysis caused by divided devotion.

Why did she look back?

  • Attachment to comfort: She couldn’t let go of the security and wealth of city life.
  • Lack of spiritual focus: Without prayer or vision, she couldn’t see where God was leading next.
  • Unwillingness to separate: She hesitated when God called her to move.

Application: Looking back is not just about the past—it’s about divided loyalty. Don’t let the temporary things of this world rob you of eternal reward.

3. The Contrast Between Abraham and Lot

Abraham and Lot both started well, but they ended differently.

  • Abraham lived as a pilgrim, moving toward God’s promise and building altars of worship wherever he went.
  • Lot lived as a settler, pitching his tent near Sodom and eventually moving in completely.

While Abraham looked up to God, Lot looked down to the fertile plains. Abraham sought a city whose foundation was built by God, but Lot sought comfort and wealth.

Application: Like Abraham, fix your eyes upward—on God’s eternal kingdom. Don’t get entangled in what is temporary.

4. Live Like A.P.E.S.

The key to not looking back is to live like A.P.E.S.

  • A – Alien: You are in the world, but not of it (John 17:16).
  • P – Pilgrim: You are passing through; your true home is heaven (Hebrews 11:13).
  • E – Exile: Like Daniel and his friends, remain faithful even in a foreign land.
  • S – Stranger (Sojourner): You will seem strange to the world because your values are different—and that’s a good thing.

Application: When you live like an “A.P.E.S.” believer, you won’t cling to the world’s values. You’ll walk with lightness, freedom, and focus on eternity.

5. The Blessing of Separation

After Abraham separated from Lot, God said, “Lift up your eyes… look north, south, east, and west—for all the land that you see I will give to you” (Genesis 13:14–15).

It was only after separation that Abraham could receive fresh revelation and blessing. Likewise, some of us cannot move into God’s next season until we let go of the “Lot” in our lives—relationships, habits, or mindsets that keep us tied to the past.

Application: Separation is not loss—it’s preparation. When you let go of what holds you back, you make space for God’s promise to unfold.

6. The Cost and Reward of Commitment

Jesus said the path to life is narrow and few find it. Following Him is not about comfort—it’s about commitment.

Missionary Jim Elliot, who gave his life for the gospel, once wrote:

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

Application: You cannot keep this earthly life forever, but you can gain eternal life by giving your all to Christ today.

7. A Story of No Turning Back

The hymn “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus” was birthed from the martyrdom of Nokseng, a tribal man from northeast India. When threatened to renounce Christ or watch his family die, he declared:

“Though no one go with me, still I will follow.
The world behind me, the cross before me.
No turning back.”

His entire family was martyred, but their faith led to the conversion of the village chief and eventually the whole village.

Application: Faith that looks forward, not back, has power to transform generations.

8. What Must You Do?

When God calls you to follow Him fully:

  • Don’t blame God – Trust His leading even when it’s hard.
  • Don’t blame others – Don’t let others’ influence slow your obedience.
  • Don’t blame yourself – Let go of regret; God redeems every past mistake.

Instead, strengthen yourself in the Lord, and keep walking forward.

Reflection Questions for Life Group

  1. What does “looking back” mean in your spiritual journey?
  2. Is there a “Lot” in your life that God is asking you to separate from?
  3. How can you live more like an A.P.E.S. believer this week?
  4. What does “no turning back” look like in your walk with God?

Closing Call

“Remember Lot’s wife. Don’t look back. Live as an alien, pilgrim, exile, and stranger—keeping your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith. The world behind you, the cross before you. No turning back.”
